Chris Sutton Labels Celtic the ‘Uncatchables’ Amid Invincible Comparisons

Chris Sutton has offered his perspective on the growing comparisons between Brendan Rodgers’ current Celtic side and the famous Invincibles of 2016-17.

While he acknowledges Celtic’s outstanding form this season, Sutton believes it’s too early to discuss an unbeaten league campaign, though he admits the team is beginning to look like the “Uncatchables.”

As Celtic continue their dominant run in the Scottish Premiership, fans have started to draw parallels to Rodgers’ first reign, when the club famously completed an unbeaten domestic treble in 2016-17. That season, Celtic went the entire league campaign without defeat, an achievement that cemented them as the Invincibles.

However, Sutton isn’t ready to place this current side on that pedestal just yet. Writing in his column in the Daily Record, the former striker explained:

“Celtic fans are starting to draw comparisons from this current side to the Invincibles from a few years ago.

“I think it’s too early for that kind of talk. There are too many hurdles still to be negotiated right now. It’s too soon to call the class of 2024 Invincibles – but wins like the other night at Pittodrie means they are starting to look like the Uncatchables. It was a huge win against a strong Aberdeen team in horrendous conditions.

“Those are the kinds of victories that win titles. Celtic were not quite at their best but they were never going to be in such difficult circumstances, with howling wind and freezing rain. It wasn’t a night for the faint-hearted – yet Celtic found a way. To be seven points clear of Aberdeen with a game in hand and 11 ahead of Rangers at this stage is massive. There is a long way to go but it’s hard to see how they can be stopped.”

Celtic’s triumph over Aberdeen midweek extended their lead to seven points over the Dons, with a game in hand. They also sit a staggering 11 points ahead of Rangers, who have struggled to maintain consistency under Philippe Clement.

Despite their commanding position, Celtic still face significant challenges in the coming weeks. The congested fixture list includes a Champions League clash with Dinamo Zagreb and the highly anticipated Premier Sports Cup Final against Rangers, all while balancing the league.
