Chris Sutton Damning Verdict On Celtic’s £13.5m Man

Three bhoys came in on loan during the January transfer window and were undoubtedly a factor in the higher energy, higher paced games we played after the winter break.

Oli Burke, Timo Weah and to a lesser extent Jeremy Toljan came in and gave the squad a bit of a lift. Timo scored on his debut and Oli Burke was terrorising defenders with his pace.

After a month or so at the club fans were clamouring for Celtic to try and keep both at the club beyond the summer. Then all of a sudden Rodgers left and everything changed.

Neil Lennon came in and has used all three loan signings sparingly with Burke rarely getting a look in at all under the former Celtic captain.

There was talk at one time bringing the Kirkcaldy born attacker to Celtic permanently with Oli seemingly quite up for the idea. However, the player who was signed for West Brom for a whopping £13.68m looks destined to return to his club. His current market value has dipped but you would have to imagine if his parent club do want to be rid of him, it will still cost quite a bit.

It’s a non-issue for Chris Sutton who appraised the Celtic team this week in his RecordSport column and was not complimentary of the 22-year-old.

“Oliver Burke is a no.” Sutton was straight to the point.

“His legs work quicker than his brain.

“Fellow loanee Timo Weah would have got pass marks if he’d played more. He was a breath of fresh air and I’m surprised he has been used so sparingly by Lennon.

“I’d like to see him back next season but not Jeremy Toljan. He’s fast but gets caught out positionally.”

Oli Burke seems to be the biggest loser of Brendan Rodgers leaving – he was doing so well under the Irishman and then it all got taken away from him a month into his Celtic career.
