Chris Sutton: Brendan Rodgers Won’t Be Losing Sleep

Following a high-profile mistake by Joe Hart in Celtic’s recent match against Yokohama F. Marinos, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has voiced his opinion on the goalkeeper situation at the club.

Despite Hart’s error leading to a goal, Sutton believes that manager Brendan Rodgers won’t be overly concerned about the goalkeeper position.

Hart, who has been a key figure for Celtic since his arrival, failed to gather a routine save, leading to a goal for Yokohama F. Marinos. While the mistake has sparked speculation about Celtic’s interest in other goalkeepers, Sutton believes that Rodgers will stick with Hart.

“Joe Hart has been a brilliant goalkeeper for Celtic. He’s made crucial saves in big games and he’s a huge character in the dressing room,” Sutton wrote in the Daily Record.

“I know he’s got the odd ricket in him – and we saw one the other night – but I woudn’t be chucking him out just for the sake of it.

“It sounds obvious, but Rodgers would have to find someone better. I don’t think is a matter of urgency, though.

“I’m sure the manager will have spent these last two weeks on the road assessing and his mind will now be made up over what he needs.

“The results in pre-season might be meaningless, but the performances will be shaping his thinking in the next couple of weeks.”

There’s no denying that Hart was a super addition to the squad, bringing experience and quality at a time when Celtic so desperately needed it.

However, if Celtic wants to make the dent in Europe that Brendan Rodgers has talked about, a goalkeeper who is capable of pulling off world-class save after world-class save is a must.

Just look at our recent results in Europe to prove this. The Lazio matches saw Fraser Forster pull off some fantastic saves. Against Barcelona in 2012 the Englishman again was unpassable. Looking further back, Manchester United in 2008 had Artur Boruc in goal. Every great European result that Celtic have had has had a top, top goalie between the sticks.
