“Smart Move” – Chris Sutton Backs Imminent Celtic Signing

Chris Sutton has weighed in on Celtic’s latest signing, Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, describing the defender’s arrival as an “interesting one” as the Hoops prepare for the start of the new campaign.

The 19-year-old centre-back joins on a season-long loan from Manchester City, having caught the eye as Premier League 2 Player of the Year last term. His move comes amid uncertainty over Cameron Carter-Vickers’ fitness, with the American still easing his way back after some minor summer surgery.

His arrival at Celtic is still to be confirmed, but CeltsAreHere understands that he has had his medical and passed it, and all that’s left to do is announce the loan. He won’t feature against St Mirren, though.

Sutton believes the timing of the move is telling. [RecordSport]

“Jahmai Simpson-Pusey arriving is an interesting one.

“He’ll not be coming from Manchester City to sit on the bench but is he going to support or replace Cameron Carter-Vickers?

“By the sounds of it, Carter-Vickers is going to need a good few weeks to get up to speed after surgery in the summer, so it’s perhaps a smart move.

“It’s also a long season so you’d imagine Simpson-Pusey will get plenty of game time. We all know the issues are further up the pitch – and they’ll need to get it right.”

While Simpson-Pusey’s arrival bolsters the defensive ranks, questions still linger about whether Celtic are doing enough to reinforce the squad ahead of a packed domestic and European schedule.

Lagerbielke and Nawrocki have left this summer, and Welsh could potentially join them, so there will need to be a few additions at centre-half, with Simpson-Pusey one of them.

Other areas need to be addressed too, like the wings, with under a month left until the window slams shut.
