Chris Davies Reveals Why Celtic Didn’t Make European Progress Under Rodgers

Chris Davies came to Celtic along side Brendan Rodgers in 2016 and served as the former Liverpool boss’ assistant at Parkhead throughout his tenure at the club.

He departed with Rodgers in 2019 for Leicester yet after recently departing the Premier League club, Davies has begun to open up about his experiences throughout his career.

Speaking to The Coaches’ Voice, Davies said it was ‘different’ at Celtic regarding Europe:

“It was different when it came to the Champions League, though. The atmosphere at Celtic Park was incredible.

“I’ve seen elite players, coaches and staff members taken aback by the noise that came out of the stadium.

“I used to joke that the fans were like hyenas because of the screeching that came out of the stands.”

The atmosphere generated inside Parkhead on a European night is truly remarkable although under Davies and Rodgers’ stewardship, there were few memorable nights.

Davies put this down to how difficult it was to adapt from dominating domestically to barely seeing the ball in Europe:

“I do think it’s difficult to be so dominant on a weekly basis in the league, often having 70 per cent of the ball, and then adapt to play such different games in Europe.

“It’s just so different to the way Celtic are used to playing on a weekly basis, where they are the protagonist.

“It was the two ends of the footballing spectrum, and it was challenging to adapt to that. Unfortunately, we couldn’t make any real progress in Europe as a result.”

In the past, several Celtic managers have made waves in Europe.

Adapting from domestic to European football wasn’t a problem for the likes of Martin O’Neill, Gordon Strachan and even Neil Lennon.

It clearly was an issue, though, for Davies and Rodgers.

Nevertheless, the pair managed to bring a wealth of success to Celtic, winning two trebles and an additional league cup.

They did, however, shamefully depart mid season in 2018/19.
