The Scottish League One side are preparing for talks with Mulgrew, as current boss Michael Tidser looks set to leave for a new challenge at relegation-threatened Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Championship.
Mulgrew, 37, has been steadily building his coaching experience since retiring as a player.
Earlier this year, he interviewed for a role within Celtic’s youth setup, a team that includes his son. Though he didn’t secure that position, he subsequently took on a developmental coaching role with Hamilton Academical’s under-18 side, where he has earned plaudits for his work with the young players.
His coaching ambitions have seen him visit top facilities, including Lennoxtown, where he observed Brendan Rodgers’ training methods. He has also visited Premier League clubs to further develop his understanding of coaching at the highest level.
If Mulgrew does take over at Kelty Hearts, speculation will likely turn to his potential backroom team. Given his strong connections with Celtic, it wouldn’t be surprising if he brings in familiar faces from his Parkhead days to support him in his first senior role.
With Kelty Hearts currently competing in League One, this could be an ideal environment for Mulgrew to establish himself as a head coach. The club has ambitions to progress up the Scottish football pyramid, making it a potentially exciting project for the former Hoops and Scotland international.
