Few would have expected Liam Scales to undergo the transformation he has this season. The Irishman has been a standout for the Hoops.
Scales hit new heights in his performances every week, and former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew has recently praised him. He said (Official Celtic FC Podcast): “Liam’s definitely up there with Kyogo, Calum McGregor and Matt O’Riley. He’s been there when it has counted, and it’s still quite early days in the season, but I’m sure he’ll want to stay in there and win stuff, and there’s no reason why he can’t if he continues to perform the way he has.”
Brendan Rodgers’ arrival at Parkhead has certainly aided Scales. He previously admitted he was on the cusp of re-joining Aberdeen before injury allowed him another opportunity in Glasgow.
Now, the 25-year-old represents his country, something Mulgrew has experienced. He said: “International recognition is another similarity. That started to happen for me as well with Scotland, and all these things fall into place, and it can change your life and your career. But the most important thing is you focus on your game, and if results come, brilliant.”
Mulgrew is someone who went on to enjoy a prosperous career with Celtic. The similarities between him and Scales are evident: “Liam has been tremendous, and the way things have gone for him reminds me a lot of myself. Even his style of play. He’s a left-sided centre-half, good on the ball, but nobody expected him to come in.”
It will be hoped by many a fan that Scales can keep his place in the Celtic team. He has become a favourite among the supporters as he continues to live out his childhood dream of playing for Celtic.
