Charlie Mulgrew Interviewed For Celtic under-18s Job; Outlines His Attributes For The Role

There are few vacancies in the Celtic academy, but none perhaps stand out more than the role of under-18s manager.

Stuart McLaren has recently departed the post and ahead of next season, the club are looking for a new face to come in and take the reigns.

Already, there have been a few links to former Celt Johnny Hayes with Charlie Mulgrew also in the mix.

The latter has lifted the lid on his application process and what he thinks he can bring to the role.

Speaking to CeltsAreHere before the 20th anniversary of the Celtic Player of the Year awards at the Hydro on Sunday evening, the 38-year-old revealed his ambitions to go into coaching and how far along the line he is to become the new U18s boss.

He said: “I’ve applied for it, I’ve done an interview but I’ve not heard anything back.

“I’m checking my phone every day – hopefully I can get that opportunity.”

Already in possession of his UEFA A License, Mulgrew has visited Lennoxtown this season to see how Brendan Rodgers works.

Down south, he also got to spend a few days taking in how the likes of Roberto de Zerbi and Russell Martin operate at Brighton and Southampton respectively.

Mulgrew has yet to take on as significant a role as Celtic U18s gaffer, but he thinks he has the attributes to do so: “I feel like I’ve got a lot of experience to pass on to these young lads”, quipped the ex utility man.

“I’ve done what they’re looking to do and break through the system and break into the first-team.

“I’ve also been let go and had to come back so I feel like I’ve covered a lot of the bases in terms of what these boys are going through.

“They’re going through a lot of stress about the pressures and understanding what it is to play for Celtic, and I feel like I can pass that on, that’s the main thing I can pass on as well as teach them the technical side of the game so it’s something I’d love to do.”
