Celtic’s hopes of landing Tyrell Malacia as a short-term replacement for Kieran Tierney appear to have taken a hit, with reports in Portugal claiming Benfica are now in discussions with Manchester United over a move for the left-back.

The Hoops had identified Malacia as a potential loan signing after Arsenal blocked Tierney’s early return to Glasgow, but according to Portuguese outlet Record, the Dutch defender is now Benfica’s top target for the left-back position.
Benfica is in the next round of the Champions League, drawing Monaco in the knockout round.
With Celtic having just Greg Taylor as their only recognised left-back, Brendan Rodgers had been keen to strengthen in that area before the January transfer deadline. However, Benfica are pushing ahead in negotiations with Manchester United, and if a deal is struck, it would likely rule Celtic out of the race.
With United bringing in Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu, he has been made available for loan. Benfica, currently battling for the Portuguese league title, view him as a key addition.
With Malacia potentially off the table and Tierney not arriving until the summer, Celtic may need to look elsewhere for left-back cover before Monday’s deadline.
Brendan Rodgers has admitted that he’s hoping to strengthen his squad before the window slams shut.
