Celtic’s Strange VAR Scottish Cup Scenario

CELTIC are in action on Saturday, taking on Championship side Greenock Morton in an early-time kick-off.

As expected, VAR will be in operation for this match. However, there are only three matches at the weekend set to have VAR in operation at them, despite three further games being played at a top-tier ground.

The only matches that will feature VAR will be the ones shown on TV, meaning Celtic v Morton, St Johnstone v The Rangers, and the Edinburgh Derby will have the technology. This is because it would cost other teams extra cash to have the equipment in use at the weekend.

Kilmarnock vs Dumbarton, Dundee United vs Stirling Uni and St. Mirren vs Dundee will not have VAR, despite being played at a stadium fitted with the technology.

It’s bizarre and makes very little sense; all games should have VAR or none. It’s as simple as that.

Maybe these teams not opting to use VAR suggests their thoughts on the technology and they’d rather not splash out on something that has caused more hassle than its worth so far in Scottish football.
