Celtic’s Lowball Dolberg Offer Sums Up Shambolic Deadline Day

Celtic’s summer transfer window came to a frustrating and chaotic close, and fresh details have now emerged that shine a light on the club’s failed attempt to land striker Kasper Dolberg.

As revealed by journalist Mark Hendry on CeltsAreHere Extra Time, Dolberg was Celtic’s top forward target in the final days of the window. With Adam Idah heading out and a glaring lack of cutting edge up front, Brendan Rodgers was desperate for reinforcements. But the club’s handling of the deal has been pathetic.

Despite Anderlecht making it clear what it would take to do business, Celtic opened Monday morning negotiations with an eyebrow-raising £4 million bid – less than half of the Belgian side’s asking price of £8.5 million. It was a bid that, frankly, was never going to be taken seriously.

As the clock ticked on deadline day, Celtic submitted as many as three offers and eventually matched Anderlecht’s valuation. But by then, the damage was done. Ajax had entered the race, and Dolberg opted for a return to his former club.

There’s also a belief that the striker’s wages were likely to have been a stumbling block for the Scottish champions, another hurdle that perhaps should’ve been foreseen long before the window’s final hours.

This one negotiation sums up Celtic’s summer. Slow movement, poor planning, and, ultimately, a deadline day that has left the squad short and the support furious.

An embarrassing transfer negotiation from Celtic, and it wasn’t the first.
