The club’s strategy for recruiting a new goalkeeper has been outlined.

With Ben Siegrist also expected to depart this summer, the club’s need for a reliable presence between the sticks is becoming increasingly urgent.

According to reports from Football Scotland, Celtic’s recruitment strategy leans towards acquiring a seasoned goalkeeper without breaking the bank.

The outlet reports: “Football Scotland understands the plan is to pay less cash for an older goalie should that be the man they identify in scouting circles.”

While the idea of signing an older, less expensive goalkeeper might not spark enthusiasm among fans hoping for a marquee signing, the rumoured link to Koen Casteels offers a promising perspective.

He certainly fits the criteria that Football Scotland outlines.

Casteels, a seasoned goalkeeper with substantial experience in top-tier European football, notably in the Bundesliga with VfL Wolfsburg, is reportedly a free agent this summer. His availability without a transfer fee aligns well with Celtic’s criteria, potentially providing the club with a high-calibre option that doesn’t strain their finances.

But it will need to be a goalkeeper like that they bring in with that criteria, otherwise, it just won’t cut it and will be seen as a step backwards.
