Celtic’s Chances Branded “Almost Impossible” by Former Bayern Midfielder

Celtic travel to Munich tonight for their Champions League play-off second leg against Bayern Munich, but former Bayern midfielder Dietmar Hamann has all but written off their chances of causing an upset.

The Hoops trail 2-1 after a spirited performance at Celtic Park last week, where Daizen Maeda’s late header gave them a lifeline after goals from Michael Olise and Harry Kane had put the German giants in control.

Hamann, however, believes that Brendan Rodgers’ side face an insurmountable task in turning the tie around against a Bayern side who, despite recent struggles, rarely falter at home.

Speaking ahead of the Allianz Arena showdown, Hamann was brutally honest about Celtic’s chances. [SunSport]

“There’s always a chance that a player is sent off in the first 10 minutes and Celtic might get a penalty, but obviously to get a penalty you have to get into Bayern’s box, which I don’t think they managed for probably the first 60 minutes at Parkhead.

“Yeah, there’s always a chance, but it’ll be mighty tough. If they nicked another goal towards the end, which they had a couple of chances to do in the first leg, then maybe.

“There’s always a chance but I think it’s almost impossible.”

The German pundit wasn’t wrong in pointing out Bayern’s early dominance in Glasgow.

Celtic struggled to break Bayern’s high press for much of the first hour. But, when Rodgers’ side grew into the game, they created several chances.

Dietmar Hamann might be dismissing Celtic’s chances, but Brendan Rodgers and his players will be out to prove the doubters wrong.

The Allianz Arena is a daunting venue, but this Celtic team has already shown they can compete with the elite.

Kick-off can’t come soon enough as Celtic look to cause an almighty upset.
