Celtic, The World Cup and Summer Football

As temperatures plummet across Scotland, it’s just under a week until domestic football resumes for Celtic.

Many have had to cope as we have experienced a winter World Cup for the first time, with temperatures in Qatar being too high to play any football in the summer months.

It would have been the perfect summer to have a World Cup tournament with no restrictions on gatherings and beer gardens able to trade at full capacity.

Recently, Scottish football has paused for the first few weeks of January due to cold weather conditions, which can result in postponements and general disruption across the board for supporters and clubs.

The break was brought forward last year due to restrictions on crowds which proved to be the correct decision.

Having now experienced a winter tournament that is continually growing interest with each passing game in the later stages of the competition, it’s time to ask the question of whether this format works.

There has been a long-running conversation in Scottish football around summer football, with many fans enjoying the experience of going along on warm June and July evenings.

Most other leagues in Scotland have continued playing, but the recent cold temperatures could cause issues.

The next World Cup tournament will occur in three North American countries.

Summer football makes sense in a lot of ways. As the temperatures continue to plummet through the winter months, you’ll not find many arguments from fans who would rather be sitting in a warm stadium in July than a minus 2, wet and windy night in the deep winter.
