Celtic Watch On: Willie Collum Set to Address Cup Final

Head of Referee Operations Willie Collum is set to reveal the thinking behind John Beaton’s decision to award a free kick to Rangers in Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup final against Celtic.

With Celtic emerging victorious on penalties, those in the Rangers support and within Scottish media looked to deflect from what was a historic win for the Hoops, who showed great character to fight back from 1-0 down at halftime and twice giving up one-goal leads.

Celtic, have now won an incredible 119 trophies in their history, including 1 European Cup, 54 league titles, 42 Scottish Cups, and 22 League Cups.

However, one moment from the game has been largely focused on, with referee John Beaton awarding a free kick to Rangers for a foul on Václav Černý by Liam Scales in the 94th minute of extra time.

Those in the Rangers camp have looked to create conspiracies since against VAR officials, putting pressure on Collum and others within the SFA, including Chief Executive Ian Maxwell.

With The Herald reporting that Collum will address the free kick decision in tomorrow’s edition of The VAR Review on the SFA’s YouTube channel at around lunchtime.

What Collum will say on the matter remains to be seen.

However, the way in which VAR officials for the game, like Frank Connor, have received so much criticism shows how those across the city simply cannot accept a Celtic victory in the Glasgow Derby, with Philippe Clement yet again putting pressure on officials after games against Celtic in which his side lost.

The fact that no other Rangers players appealed for a penalty tells a big story, and with those on commentary making no big deal of the incident while being able to hear those in the VAR studio themselves, it appears that a conspiracy has been created after the game, despite thousands in attendance believing it to be more than just a free kick.
