‘Celtic Tried to Sign Me’ – €6million Defender Confirms Bhoys Bid

It was perhaps the most long drawn out ‘transfer rumour’ of the winter. Celtic’s interest of Belgian right-back Timothy Castagne would not go away.

The defender who moved to Atalanta for €6million was playing a bit part role for Atalanta before the window opened and Celtic seemed to fancy their chances of bringing the defender in during the winter window. Castagne started to get games during this period after admitting himself he would look elsewhere if he was not going to be played by the Italian side.

The player scored a fantastic goal against Juventus and has been going from strength to strength.

Speaking about the Celtic interest, Castagne said: “I didn’t play much before the window I played little and I admit I thought about moving.” he told RecordSport.

“But how could I leave it like this? Celtic tried to buy me, but this is the best moment of my career and I want to stay here.

“If you play trust increases. It’s natural. It’s also useless to talk about going to a Champions League or Europa League club because we at Atalanta would like to qualify.

“And as for the national time, my goal is being at Euro 2020.”

With Celtic only having Jeremy Toljan until the summer with no first option to buy, many Celtic fans believe the club might try and sign the player in the summer because he wants to play in European football competition.

It still seems pretty clear if he doesn’t get to do that with Atalanta then he will look elsewhere come the summer and look to force his way into the Belgian squad which is more than possible at Celtic.
