The winger has had a wonderful season so far, despite most of his appearances coming from off the bench until new boss Roberto De Zerbi took charge of the Seagulls. In 14 starts, Mitoma has bagged himself seven goals and four assists.

He’s really caught the eye down south, and has many raving about him. After his goal against Brentford, he now holds the record for the most goals scored by a Japanese player in a single season in the Premier League.

Things could have been a lot different for the player, with Ange Postecoglou admitting that Celtic were aware of the player and tried to bring him in at the same time as Kyogo. The Hoops gaffer also conceded that Celtic missed out on the player because of the Premier League interest.

He said: [The Herald]

“Yeah, I tried to get him but it was already almost done for him to go to Brighton.

“Him and Kyogo were the first two players I tried to bring across here. Mitoma would have been a good signing but unfortunately for us, Brighton also have a very good scouting network.

“They managed to pick him up but there was never any doubt in my mind that he was another one who was going to be a top player. He’s done really well down there which hasn’t surprised me.”
