Celtic Told Star ‘Could Easily Be Playing Top-End Premier League’

Celtic’s dominant 4-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday brought plenty of positives, but it was Kieran Tierney’s return to Celtic Park that caught the eye. The left-back, pulling on the Hoops once again, showed exactly why he’s still considered a top-level player.

At 28, Tierney looked as quick and strong as ever, dealing well with Newcastle’s Anthony Elanga down the wing. The pacey Swedish forward had little joy as Tierney matched him for speed and aggression throughout the game.

After the match, Brendan Rodgers praised Tierney’s display and attitude, making it clear how much he values the defender. The Irishman said Tierney is good enough to play at the highest level in England but chose to come back to Glasgow instead.

Tierney, who got a huge welcome from the home crowd, played a key role in one of Celtic’s goals with a powerful run down the left. It was the kind of moment fans have missed, full of energy, intent, and a clear bond with the club.

He said: (BBC Sport), “I wanted him to get a specific welcome back. Just to get him back here, at his age, he could easily be playing at the top end of the Premier League.

“So, to get a player of that level and that desire to play for Celtic is amazing for us. It was a great moment and another connection with him, and the support.

“Then you see when he is on there. He is playing against Elanga, who has been a brilliant signing for Newcastle, but Kieran has got pace and power, and then you see how he created the goal. Just that explosive speed and the quality.”

Celtic fans will have been pleased not just with the score line but with how Tierney looked on his return. His performance was a strong reminder of the quality Celtic have brought back into the squad.

Going up against a Premier League side and handling the challenge so well will only build more belief in what Tierney can offer this season. With the Champions League qualifiers coming and trophies to fight for, having him fit and ready could make a big difference.

Rodgers made it clear this move isn’t just about memories. Bringing Tierney back shows real ambition. He’s a player who could be playing in England’s top tier but chose to come back to Celtic and looked right at home.

If Saturday’s showing is anything to go by, Celtic have brought in someone who can still shine in the biggest games. The home support will be hoping there is much more of that to follow.
