Former Aston Villa and Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend believes Celtic could be an ideal landing spot for Callum Wilson this summer, as the Newcastle United striker prepares to become a free agent.

Wilson, 33, is out of contract at the end of the season and has featured in the Premier League nine times for Newcastle this term. While his appearances have been limited, his pedigree is undeniable—he hit double figures in the Premier League last season and has played Champions League football as recently as last year.
Townsend believes that if Wilson can maintain a decent level of fitness, the move to Celtic would benefit both the player and the club.
“Callum Wilson is out of contract in the summer and I could absolutely see him at Celtic, I think it could be ideal for him,” Townsend told BoyleSports, who offer the latest Football odds.
“He is on a free transfer but could still get a significant wage, the one problem is if he can stay fit enough to have the impact on the team he and the club would want.
“At Celtic he could play 25 games and win the league, he has experience and has been around a long time, when he plays he looks good it’s just the injury concerns.
“A move to a club like Celtic would make a lot of sense for him, he could help Adam Idah with his experience, but he would need to be able to play 30 times in all competitions from Celtic’s point of view.
“I think the move would work if that was the case, otherwise Celtic may look elsewhere.”
Celtic are known to be targeting attacking reinforcements ahead of the summer window, but Wilson’s fitness record would be a key factor in any potential move.
Kyogo left the Hoops in the winter and has been replaced. Maeda has moved into the central role, where he is excelling, but whether or not Rodgers sees that as a long-term move or not remains to be seen.
Signing Wilson wouldn’t really raise much eyebrows, he is a typical Rodgers signing, and does bring some quality and experience to the side. He wouldn’t be a starter, but he’d get a fair amount of games for sure.
