It seems a little premature to talk about the potential of what happens if Celtic do clinch the league in the coming month, however, it is worth noting the ramifications of what’s going on elsewhere that could impact on the Hoops should they win the league.
The automatic Champions league spot up for grabs in the SPFL does come with a caveat and right now – it could come into play.
Whoever wins the SPFL should go straight into the Champions League group stage but only if the side who wins Europe’s elite competition also qualifies for the tournament through their league.
So – if Liverpool win the Champions League and they finish in the top four of the English Premier League – the SPFL would get the automatic spot.
However, Villarreal putting out Bayern Munich to reach reach the semi-final puts that spot in jeopardy.

IF Villarreal were to win the Champions League – the SPFL would miss out on the automatic slot. The Spanish side are currently seventh in La Liga and have little chance of qualifying for the competition within their league.
Celtic need to go and win the league before any of this really matters to the club. We will be watching the Champions League closely and if we do clinch the title – we will be cheering against our friends at Villarreal.
