Tyrell Malacia’s proposed loan switch to Benfica has collapsed, with Manchester United and the Portuguese side failing to agree on a loan fee and buy option.

The development leaves Malacia’s future uncertain, with United still open to offers before the January transfer window closes.
Tyrell Malacia could still leave Manchester United before the deadline despite talks breaking down with Benfica. It’s understood Benfica did not get to United’s numbers for a potential deal. Other clubs remain interested. #MUFC

Celtic had identified Malacia as a potential target after Arsenal blocked Kieran Tierney’s immediate return, but with Tierney now set to rejoin in the summer, the Hoops may or may not revisit the Malacia option before Monday’s deadline.
United are said to be weighing up multiple loan requests for Malacia, meaning there is still a chance he could leave Old Trafford in the coming days.
With Greg Taylor the only recognised left-back in the squad, Brendan Rodgers may still look for cover, but with time running out in the window, it remains to be seen if the Hoops will make a concrete approach for Malacia.
Celtic desperately need to bring in at least a short-term option at left-back to cover or push Greg Taylor ahead of the return of Kieran Tierney in the summer.
The current Celtic star has just five months left on his deal at Parkhead, and is looking to sign a pre-contract elsewhere.
