Celtic Target to Miss Opener Amid Transfer Speculation

Celtic’s ongoing pursuit of Jakob Breum has taken a twist after the winger was ruled out of Go Ahead Eagles’ Eredivisie opener due to injury.

The 21-year-old will not feature on Friday night when the Dutch side host Fortuna Sittard, with the Dane picking up an ankle issue in their recent defeat to PSV.

Jakob Breum

Breum completed the full 94 minutes of Sunday’s Johan Cruyff Shield clash, which saw Go Ahead Eagles fall short in a 2-1 loss. However, he emerged from that game carrying a knock that now rules him out of the first league fixture of the new campaign.

Manager Melvin Boel provided an update on the winger’s condition, indicating the setback is not expected to keep him out long term. Boel told De Stentor that the match comes “too soon” for Breum but expressed hope he would be back in action next week.

The timing of the injury comes as Celtic weigh up whether to meet Go Ahead Eagles’ valuation of the player. The Dutch club are believed to be holding out for at least £5 million for Breum, having already rejected several offers from the Glasgow side.

Brendan Rodgers is targeting reinforcements in wide areas before the end of the window, with Breum emerging as a key target. The Irishman keen to increase the quality and depth of his attacking options, and the Danish U21 international has impressed scouts with his ability to carry the ball and create openings in the final third.

The setback does little to derail Celtic’s interest at this stage, although it adds a minor complication to a potential deal. With negotiations still active, the injury will be monitored closely by the Hoops as they consider their next move.

Whether Celtic choose to push towards the £5m mark remains to be seen, but Breum’s absence this weekend will do little to slow the noise around his future.
