Celtic Target ‘Oozes Class’ – Rodgers Chasing Former £7.5million Man

CELTIC have been linked with a move for Nick Powell with reports down south claiming the Parkhead club have had him watch several times this season.

This is an exciting transfer development for Celtic if true.

On the face of it, many who don’t know the player will believe Celtic are looking for bargains in the Championship and not showing any sort of outward ambition.

However, this is far from the case – Nick Powell is a Premier League player playing in a Championship side. The words from Match of the Day Pundit Danny Murphy as he walked viewers through Powell’s excellent performance against West Ham when League one Wigan knocked the premier league club out of the competition. The former Liverpool player declaring that Powell ‘Oozes Class’.

The 24-year-old has been at the DW Stadium on a permanent basis since 2016 after initially playing for the club on-loan during his time as a Manchester United player.

Powell was picked up by Manchester United as an 18-year-old playing for, Crewe Alexandria – the Manchester giants paid a handsome fee of around £7.5million at the time to land the starlet (According to TransferMarkt.com).

After that, Powell went into the United youth system before being loaned out to Wigan, Leicester and Hull up until his release at the end of the 2016 season where Wigan picked the player up on a free transfer – Nick returning to his old loan club who were then in League One.

The midfielder helped Wigan out of League One back into the Championship where the player currently sits on three goals and four assists for the season after just seven games.

Wigan themselves are midtable at the moment after enjoying a decent start back in the Championship.

The player’s contract is up at the end of the season an he’s yet to sign an extension at the DW. This has set alarm bells ringing for several clubs who want to land the player – Celtic reportedly being one of them.

If Celtic could convince this young man to come up to Scotland on a pre-contract, it would be a huge get for the bhoys.

His ability, experience and the position he plays makes him the perfect replacement for Stuart Armstrong and gives Celtic something different in the final third of the park.

He may only be 24, but Powell made nine appearances for Manchester United before leaving the club – two of them being in the Champions League.

The goal scoring midfielder has also racked up 36 goals for Wigan over his two spells at the club.

Powell would fit Celtic’s squad and transfer model. The player could be brought in for 3-4 years and be moved on for big money should he prove himself.

Over to you Peter…
