Celtic-linked striker Louis Munteanu was named on the bench once again as CFR Cluj faced Botoşani on Sunday.
His absence from the line-up this weekend suggests that the issue hasn’t been resolved. After sitting out the Braga match entirely, Munteanu was only introduced as a second-half substitute in Cluj’s latest Romanian Superliga outing.
The game itself was packed with drama, ending in a six-goal thriller. Cluj and Botoşani shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw, with both sides showing attacking intent throughout. Despite being brought on to make an impact, Munteanu didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet.
There had been hopes he might return to the starting XI, but his continued role from the bench points to ongoing tensions behind the scenes. It’s a surprising situation given how important he was for Cluj last season, leading their scoring charts and attracting attention from clubs outside Romania, including Celtic.
Interest from Celtic earlier in the summer looked promising, but talk of a potential move has quietened down. Munteanu remains under contract at Cluj, and with no fresh movement on a deal, speculation has slowed. However, his current situation could still open the door before the transfer window closes.

If the wage row continues and he stays out of the starting picture, a move might suit both player and club. For now, though, Cluj are holding firm, and the striker will need to work his way back into the side or push for a resolution.
As things stand, Munteanu’s future remains unclear. What’s obvious is that his talent isn’t in question, but until the off-field issues are sorted, the 23-year-old may continue to play a reduced role.
