Celtic’s pursuit of Giuseppe Ambrosino looks to have hit a dead end, with reports in Italy claiming the young striker is determined to fight for his place at Napoli.
According to Corriere del Mezzogiorno, the Italy under-21 international has turned the heads of several clubs this summer, including Celtic, but is now expected to remain in Naples for the coming season. Ambrosino’s current contract runs until next summer, and while speculation over his future has been rife, he appears keen to prove himself in Serie A rather than seek a move elsewhere.
The 21-year-old has spent recent seasons out on loan, gaining valuable experience, but faces stiff competition for a starting spot at Napoli. For Celtic, who have been linked with adding another forward to compete with Adam Idah, Johnny Kenny and new signings this summer, Ambrosino had emerged as an intriguing option.
However, with the player now reportedly set on staying in Italy, Brendan Rodgers and the club’s recruitment team may have to look elsewhere as the clock ticks down towards the transfer deadline.
Brendan Rodgers is keen to add another striker to the ranks, to challenge Adam Idah at the top end of the pitch. The gaffer said:
“There’s no doubt we need to reinforce the top line,” he told SunSport
“I’m really pleased with where we are structurally in terms of defensive numbers.
“From back line to midfield we can cope domestically and in European competition.
“But we need competition at the top end of the field.
“I really don’t know whether that’ll come at this point but it’s something we know we need.
“In the meantime, we’ll work with the players that are here until reinforcements arrive.”
