While Gustaf Lagerbielke may be spending this season on loan at FC Twente, the Celtic centre-back has maintained strong connections with former Hoops midfielder Matt O’Riley, who left the club for Brighton in the summer.
In a recent interview with Voetbal International (via Twente Insite), Lagerbielke opened up about his friendship with O’Riley and the unique way they stay connected—through guided meditation sessions.
Meditation and Football
Lagerbielke revealed that O’Riley introduced him to a spiritual meditation coach, someone who helps them both find mental clarity and balance. “Matt knows a guru, a spiritual meditation coach,” he said. “He organises a guided meditation session once a week for Matt, me and a few other guys. Simply via webcam.” In the fast-paced world of professional football, where mental strength is just as important as physical ability, it’s no surprise that players seek different ways to stay focused and composed.

Finding Calm Amid the Chaos
The Swedish defender explained that these sessions are more than just moments of relaxation—they also provide valuable life lessons. “We exchange experiences, the guru gives us tips for on the field and in our lives,” he shared. The pressures of top-level football can be intense, with players constantly under scrutiny. Having an outlet like meditation allows them to reset and maintain their composure, both on and off the pitch.
A Daily Practice
In addition to the weekly group meditation, Lagerbielke has made it a part of his daily routine. “Then, we meditate together for about forty minutes. Very pleasant and relaxing. In addition to that session, I also try to meditate for myself every day,” he added. It’s a testament to the growing role mindfulness plays in the modern game, helping players stay grounded amid the demands of elite competition.

Celtic Connections Remain Strong
Despite being on loan in the Netherlands and O’Riley now in the English Premier League, Lagerbielke’s comments highlight the lasting friendships forged at Celtic. Fans will be encouraged to see the strong bond between former teammates, and with Lagerbielke developing at Twente, his time in the Eredivisie could help him return to Celtic as an even stronger player, both mentally and physically.
