Andy Halliday has singled out Reo Hatate as Celtic’s standout performer in Sunday’s 1-1 Glasgow derby draw at Ibrox, praising the midfielder’s all-round contribution in what was otherwise a flat affair.

While the match itself lacked real quality and cutting edge, particularly in the final third, Hatate’s influence didn’t go unnoticed.
The Japanese playmaker played a key role both in and out of possession, helping Adam Idah lead the press while also tracking back to assist Callum McGregor defensively.
Speaking on Clyde 1, Halliday was full of praise for Hatate, insisting he was a class above on the day.
“Reo Hatate was Celtic’s best player by a country mile, for me.
“I think he’s someone that is completely undervalued by a section, and I stress just a section, of the Celtic support.
“He’s one of the players who, when he leaves, you’ll realise how important he is. He always tried to look for the ball in tight areas, turn and play forward, and be progressive.
“But even more impressive was the other side of his game. The amount of loose balls he picked up on the pitch, in tight areas again, and in tight pockets of space he’d find that pass to send it out to the full-back.
“He was comfortably Celtic’s best player on the pitch yesterday.”
Hatate battled injuries for large parts of last season but he’s put that behind him this term and has often been the link between Celtic’s midfield and attack. His ability to operate in tight areas, turn sharply, and play forward was one of the few creative sparks in an otherwise low-tempo contest.
Hatate’s growing influence will be vital heading into the final stretch of the season, particularly with a Treble still on the line. If Sunday’s display is anything to go by, he looks to be hitting his stride at the perfect time.
There have been some suggestions that the Japanese playmaker could be on the way out this summer; that would be a huge loss for Celtic.
