Celtic midfielder Paulo Bernardo has stepped up to defend teammate Kasper Schmeichel, who has recently come under heavy criticism in Denmark following their 5-2 defeat to Portugal in UEFA Nations League quarterfinals. With Schmeichel now set for an extended period on the sidelines due to a shoulder injury sustained in extra time, Bernardo has spoken out against the treatment of the Celtic goalkeeper.

Bernardo Calls for More Respect
Bernardo addressed the backlash Schmeichel has faced in his homeland, insisting that the 38-year-old deserves far more respect. “Kasper should get more respect, but this is football,” said the Celtic midfielder RecordSport. “When things go bad on the pitch, we are all criticised by some people. Cristiano Ronaldo still gets criticised – and he has won five Ballon d’Ors. It’s part of football and we need to deal with it.”
A Proven Leader with a Strong Mentality
Bernardo was quick to emphasise Schmeichel’s pedigree and the qualities that have made him a top-level goalkeeper for so long. “It’s easy to criticise, but you look at the level he has got to,” he said. “I bet it won’t affect him though. He is a great leader with personality and a strong mentality. I don’t think he will be affected by that. Kasper knows how to deal with that. He is looking forward to getting out on the pitch again.”
The Importance of Schmeichel to Celtic
Schmeichel’s impact at Celtic has been felt both on and off the pitch. Since arriving at the club in the summer, his experience and leadership have been invaluable, and Bernardo highlighted just how crucial he has been for the squad. “He’s very important to us. You can see on the pitch how good Kasper is. He’s improved our type of play because we can use him all the time. Kasper does everything well as a goalkeeper.”

Injury Opens the Door for Others
With Schmeichel now sidelined, Celtic will need to rely on other options between the sticks, potentially giving Viljami Sinisalo an extended run in the team. While Bernardo acknowledged the unfortunate nature of Schmeichel’s injury, he also pointed out that it could be an opportunity for others to step up. “Injuries happen and it’s an opportunity for other guys,” he noted.
Schmeichel’s absence will be a blow for Celtic, but his experience and resilience suggest he will be back stronger. In the meantime, Bernardo’s defence of his teammate highlights the respect Schmeichel commands within the squad, both at club and international level.
