The Jupiler Pro League side have already made multiple approaches for the 23-year-old, and it now seems Celtic are open to the move to ensure Welsh gets regular game time. While he featured in the recent draw against Dundee United, Stephen will be used sparingly between now and the end of the season if he stays.

Homegrown Status a Factor

Some believe Welsh has been retained at Celtic more for his homegrown status under UEFA rules rather than his role on the pitch. Despite always giving his all in the green and white, it’s clear he remains down the pecking order at the club. A loan spell could provide him with much-needed minutes and help him develop further, potentially benefitting all parties.

Dane Murray Set to Return

One factor making the move possible is the expected return of Dane Murray from his loan spell at Queen’s Park. The centre-half has impressed during his time away, earning plaudits from those within the club. There’s a belief among some at Lennoxtown that Murray could step into Welsh’s current squad role, ensuring Celtic remain compliant with the homegrown player regulations.

For Welsh, a stint in Belgium offers a chance to reignite his career and gain valuable first-team experience, while Celtic continue to plan for the future with a deep pool of defensive talent.
