Aberdeen goalkeeper, Joe Lewis believes that Celtic are in a battle for 2nd place and a Champions League spot with both the Dons and Hibernian looking to push Neil Lennon’s side all the way.
As reported by the Daily Record, the Aberdeen captain refused to rule out any possibilities when it came to how the league table will finish after an extremely poor start by the Hoops who had much higher expectations coming into this season.
“I’m not going to rule out finishing second, that would be silly from the position we’re in. I don’t want to target specific teams, we’ll just take it game by game as we always do. Our focus right now is on Sunday. We’re halfway through and the season is taking shape.
“But it has to be a target for us to finish as high up the league as possible. And second place is still very achievable for us at this point in the season. We’re not going to write it off, that’s for sure.
“A Champions League spot for second place is certainly a carrot for every club. And third place gets you further into the Europa League than it has done in previous seasons. So that’s there for the teams in and around it.
“Second place is definitely there for us if we can put a good run of form together and get some solid results.
“But the teams around us like Celtic and Hibs will be thinking the exact same thing as we are. They’ll be fighting us for it until the death. Look at the great run Livingston are on right now as well, so you can’t write off anyone in this league.”
At this current stage, Aberdeen finds themselves four points behind Celtic, with the Glasgow side having one game in hand.
Realistically this weekend could be a big factor in how this is determined, with the top four all playing each other as Aberdeen take on Rangers and Celtic take on Hibs.
If Celtic were to fall down the table and be split come the end of the season, it would be an absolute disaster of a season.
The Bhoys find themselves in a pretty lucky place, in that 2nd place in the league also has a chance of making the Champions League. So if we don’t win the League title then finishing in Celtic is an absolute MUST. Who would have thought we would be saying this last year?
