Celtic Scapegoat On His Way to Proving People Wrong

Celtic social media is a mixed bag. You can have great conversations and debate, but it can also be a cesspit for the most reactionary and nauseating takes.

In that respect, we’ve just moved that kind of chat from the pub to the inter web over the past 25 years. Now instead of hashing things out with your mate John’s terrible Celtic take over a couple of pints, you’re now reading his tweets and he’s got a whole bunch of others backing him up.

Picking a scapegoat or a whipping boy is nothing new in football. But I do always find it interesting seeing who develops into that player as the season progresses. Last year, it was Greg Taylor, so after he made vast improvements to his game, another person had to be chosen. When things aren’t going our way, it has to be someone’s fault, right?

Daizen Maeda has come out of the pot and many Celtic fans have been down on the Japanese star for quite some time.

Daizen brings much more to this Celtic team than goals. His energy, pressing and ability to pull players out of position to make space for his teammates are all great traits. However, when he misses in front of goals, it’s what’s in the back of most peoples minds.

No, Maeda isn’t as prolific as either Kyogo or Giakoumakis, but he’s no dud. Yet, if you read social media posts pre and post match this season, you’d think he was a horrible player.

Maeda has been doing well, but there’s plenty of room for improvement. Ange told Celtic fan media last week that Maeda is a work in progress and he wasn’t going to scrap him after a couple of missed opportunities.

It was nice to see the Japanese winger get his goal at the weekend. It should help give him a shot of confidence as we head into this vital pre-world cup period. Daizen will be one of the very few Celts heading to Qatar. He’ll want to make sure he’s in top form.

For the people who now analyse Daizen’s every move and moan if he fails to make a pass or misses out in a duel, maybe look at the whole picture.
