Celtic Release Troubling Friday UEFA Statement

Celtic have been hit with a fresh disciplinary notice from UEFA following their midweek clash with Aston Villa, raising concerns over potential fan restrictions for the knockout round of the Champions League.

The issue stems from the use of pyrotechnics, an offence that previously saw the club fined €20,000 after an incident during the match against Borussia Dortmund earlier in the campaign. That ruling also carried a suspended sanction, meaning any repeat within two years could result in Celtic being banned from selling tickets to supporters for one away match in UEFA competition.

Now, following Wednesday night’s game against Villa, UEFA have stepped in again, leaving the club facing the real possibility of an away-day lockout.

Celtic have confirmed they will make “robust representations” to UEFA in a bid to challenge the latest charge and ensure supporters are not punished collectively for the actions of a few. However, the club have also warned fans that the risk of a ban is very real, urging caution when making travel arrangements for future European fixtures.

A club statement acknowledged the situation, stating:

“The Club will obviously make robust representations to UEFA and will make every effort to ensure that our fans can attend our next UEFA Champions League match. However, clearly there is a risk that supporters may not be able to attend.”

This is an unwanted distraction for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Celtic have not reached the last 16 of the competition since 2012/13, and while the focus should be on the football, the looming possibility of a supporter ban is a major concern for the travelling support.

More details will emerge once UEFA’s disciplinary process plays out, but for now, fans are left waiting to see if their next European away day is in jeopardy.
