Falkirk secured the Championship title on Saturday, completing back-to-back promotions under John McGlynn. After romping to the League One title last term, the Bairns held their nerve to finish three points clear of Livingston in a tense finish to the campaign.

Heading into the final day, Falkirk were top only on goal difference, level on points with Livi and knowing only a win would guarantee the title. But it looked like they might buckle under the pressure when Hamilton took an early lead in Forth Valley.

Ethan Ross, however, stepped up with two vital goals—first drawing Falkirk level and then putting them ahead. Former Celtic player Calvin Miller added a third to seal a 3-1 victory and ensure that Falkirk would be returning to the Premiership for the first time since 2010.

It capped a remarkable turnaround for the club, who were stuck in League One for five seasons before McGlynn’s arrival sparked a revival.

Partick Thistle’s 1-0 win over Livingston meant Falkirk lifted the title with a three-point cushion, sparking celebrations among the travelling support.

Celtic last played a league match at the Falkirk Stadium in the 2009/10 campaign. While the sides have met since in cup competitions at the Bairns’ stadium—including behind closed doors during the Covid-hit 2020/21 season—the fixture will return to the league calendar for the first time in a decade and a half.

Of course, the sides met at Celtic Park in the cup this season.

For Brendan Rodgers’ side, it’s another ground to tick off as they look to defend their crown next season. For Falkirk, it’s a long-awaited return to the top table of Scottish football.
