THOMAS ROBERT was on Celtic’s radar last season when the club invited him for a short trial at Lennoxtown during a period of instability at the club. Neil Lennon hadn’t been gone a month and while John Kennedy was in charge – there was nobody permanent to make a decision on players coming in.
The player has today left Scottish football for the Belgian second flight – signing for Royal Excel Mouscron. [RecordSport]
Thomas is the son of former Newcastle midfielder Laurent Robert and shocked many last season when he signed for Airdrie on a short term deal. It appeared to be an attempt to get the player first team football with an eye to getting a move to a Scottish Premier League side.
It was confirmed in March the player had spent time at Lennoxtown when Airdrie boss Ian Murray revealed the trial [Glasgow Times].
He said: “I can provide clarity on Thomas being in with Celtic and training with them.
“It’s brilliant for him personally and brilliant for the club because it shows that we are doing something right.”
After his short period at Lennoxtown, Thomas went back to Airdrie where he seen out the season. He fell off the Celrtic radar shortly after and clearly didn’t impress enough to warrant another look.
Had the coaches seen something in the midfielder – they would have certainly passed that information on to Ange Postecoglou.
