In the aftermath of yesterday’s disappointing 0-0 draw with Livingston, Celtic midfielder and current stand-in captain Callum McGregor for brutal with his teammates and didn’t hold back when asked what went wrong..
As reported by the Daily Record, McGregor admitted that the players ‘didn’t understand the game’ as they struggled throughout the 90 minutes against Livi.
“It’s not good enough.
“We took far too long to get going in the first half and put ourselves under pressure. We didn’t really understand the game, in terms of trying to build out and giving them territory, that’s what they want.
“(It was) really, really poor. Second half was a little bit better and we had a great chance to score but it’s a disappointing afternoon and we need to learn quickly.
“That’s what they want; they felt good about themselves, they won a lot of games recently and they are on a good run. They understand the game and get it forward, they use their presence and the ball.
“That’s all the basics of the game. First half we put ourselves under too much pressure with too many short passes, and we have to turn them in that sense.
“When you get the wee bits of play you get chances, so yes we are disappointed.”
These sort of comments are not what you want to be hearing, especially from the man who is captaining the side.
We all understand, it’s a bit more difficult with players and coaching staff missing but that doesn’t excuse any part of that performance yesterday.
Things have taken a dramatic fall at Celtic Park over the last few months and standards within seems to be one of those things.
Change is drastically needed at this stage, as well as a full rebuild to go with it and should we should be starting this as soon as possible.
Where do we go from here is the question on everyone’s lips? Who knows at this stage.
