Celtic have rejected a loan proposal from KV Mechelen for defender Stephen Welsh, with their current intention to keep him within the squad amid interest from other clubs, report Sky Sports.

Welsh, 24, has also attracted attention from several English Championship teams. However, Celtic’s stance suggests they are cautious about thinning their defensive line without adequate replacements.
For Welsh, a move could indeed represent a chance to establish himself as a central figure in a team’s defence, potentially elevating his career and offering regular first-team football. Such a step could be beneficial for his development, aligning with his professional aspirations beyond the confines of a backup role at Celtic.
Celtic’s decision to hold onto Welsh at this time reflects their poor transfer window so far. Had they got a defender in by now, then Welsh could maybe make a move and secure some regular minutes.
A defender is still on the wanted list for Celtic, so maybe once that piece of business is complete Welsh can look to secure some game time.
