Celtic loanee Odin Thiago Holm could be about to take part in one of world football’s biggest tournaments this summer, with LAFC handed a surprise route into the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Norwegian midfielder, who joined LAFC on loan in January, might be lining up against the likes of Chelsea and Flamengo if things fall into place for the MLS side.

This unusual opportunity has come about after Mexican side León were removed from the tournament for breaking FIFA’s multi-club ownership rules due to links with CF Pachuca.
In response, FIFA is now set to hold a one-off play-off match between LAFC and Mexican giants Club América. LAFC earned their place in the play-off after finishing runners-up to León in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League, while Club América currently sit top of the region’s coefficient rankings. The winner of the play-off will take León’s spot in Group D of the Club World Cup, where they would face Chelsea, Flamengo and ES Tunis.
It’s a huge opportunity for LAFC on and off the pitch. Simply taking part in the tournament guarantees each club around £10 million in prize money, which would be a major boost for the American side and an incredible experience for Holm himself.
For the Celtic loanee, it could be a much-needed chance to reignite his career. Holm has had limited chances in Glasgow, and even when Celtic lifted the Scottish Premiership title last season, he wasn’t heavily involved and kept a low profile during the celebrations.

After picking up an injury, he’s looking to get his rhythm back and hopes this time in MLS can put him in the right frame to push for a place in Brendan Rodgers’ squad when he returns in December.
Holm has said he still wants to play for Celtic and even signed a new contract before going on loan. If he plays well in the summer against big teams, it could boost his chances. If LAFC win their play-off and reach the Club World Cup, it could be a big moment in his career.
