Celtic Loanee Set for Club World Cup Despite Injury Woes

Celtic loanee Odin Thiago Holm looks set to be named in Los Angeles FC’s squad for the Club World Cup, despite missing the playoff victory that secured their place in the tournament. The Norwegian midfielder, currently on loan in MLS, was not included in the matchday squad for LAFC’s dramatic 2-1 extra-time win over Club América on May 31.

Each participating team is required to submit a final squad comprising a minimum of 26 and a maximum of 35 players, including at least three goalkeepers. This squad must be finalised and submitted by June 10, ahead of the tournament’s kickoff on June 14.

Holm, who joined the American side in January, has endured a frustrating start to his time in Los Angeles. A leg injury kept him sidelined for the early part of the season, and although he returned to action in late March with a short cameo against Sporting Kansas City, his game time has remained limited.

So far, he has made just three appearances totalling 98 minutes, with no goals or assists to his name.

Despite his absence in the playoff, Holm retains his spot in LAFC’s Club World Cup squad — a sign that the club still views him as part of their plans moving forward.

The win over Club América was historic for LAFC, as it clinched the final place in the newly expanded 32-team tournament. Denis Bouanga’s 115th-minute strike proved decisive after Igor Jesus had pulled the Mexican side level in the closing moments of regulation.

Holm will now travel with the LAFC squad to the United States-based tournament, where they face a daunting Group D schedule: Chelsea in Atlanta on June 16, Espérance de Tunis in Nashville on June 20, and Flamengo in Orlando on June 24.

While it’s uncertain how much of a role Holm will play in the tournament, the experience could be a valuable step in his development. Celtic will be monitoring the situation closely, with the 22-year-old’s long-term future at the Hoops still to be determined.
