Gustaf Lagerbielke’s future at Celtic remains uncertain as his loan spell at FC Twente appears unlikely to be extended beyond this season.

Despite being handed regular game time in the Eredivisie, racking up 29 appearances, the Swedish defender has not done enough to convince those watching him closely in the Netherlands.
Dutch journalist Tijmen van Wissing, who follows FC Twente closely, has poured cold water on any talk of a permanent deal for the 24-year-old.
Speaking to TwenteFans, he was blunt in his assessment:
“He was rightly put in the spotlight a bit in December and January. Then he did nicely at right central back, but at the moment I see no reason to put any effort into bringing him in.
“He brings you so little in terms of football. It makes you restless, it’s pitiful how he hits balls over the sideline. With the current rate, I wouldn’t put any energy into a new contract for Lagerbielke.”
The centre-back, signed by Celtic in 2023, struggled to make an impression under Brendan Rodgers and was sent out on loan in search of regular minutes. While he initially showed some promise during a purple patch around December and January, that form hasn’t been sustained. He did make a few team-of-the-week appearances, too.
Celtic did not include a purchase clause in the loan agreement with Twente, and unless another suitor emerges, Lagerbielke could find himself back at Lennoxtown in the summer.
However, given Rodgers’ lack of trust in the player before his departure and the availability of other options in central defence, it remains to be seen whether the Swede has a long-term future in Glasgow, but it looks extremely doubtful.
