Celtic Loanee in Slow Start to Life at New Club

Celtic loanee Gustaf Lagerbielke has had a slow start to life at FC Twente.

The central defender joined the Eredivisie side at the end of the summer transfer window, completing a loan switch to the Netherlands.

After joining the Hoops from Elfsborg for just under £3m (Transfermarkt) last summer, Lagerbielke went on to make just 10 appearances during his maiden year in Glasgow.

Other than a last-minute winner against Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League, he didn’t do much in a disappointing first 12 months in green and white.

Manager Brendan Rodgers openly stated Lagerbielke wasn’t in his plans over the summer but praised the 24-year-old’s elite attitude.

A loan exit seemed inevitable last month, with the Swede eventually signing for Twente.

So far in Holland, though, things have been difficult for Lagerbielke.

While he temporarily left Celtic to play, he has not yet racked up a single minute of game time with his new club.

Indeed, Twente have played four times since the defender joined the side, but he has remained on the bench for every single match.

With the club having four games in the next 12 days, though, Lagerbielke will be hoping he soon makes his bow in red and white.

Thursday’s Europa League tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford would be the ideal opportunity for a debut, but if not, the centre-half could play in Sunday’s league match against NAC Breda.

Monitoring his progress when he eventually gets minutes should be intriguing.
