Stuart Armstrong is on the lookout for a new club after Sheffield Wednesday confirmed his departure at the end of the current season. The 33-year-old midfielder was one of seven players released by the club, who published their retained list following the conclusion of the Championship campaign.
Armstrong joined Wednesday in January, signing a short-term deal after leaving MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps. During his four-month spell at Hillsborough, he featured in 11 of the club’s final 17 league matches. Despite his efforts, the Owls opted not to renew his contract as they begin preparations for the next campaign.

The midfielder’s move to Sheffield followed a short North American adventure, but it was his time in England and Scotland that defined his career. Armstrong previously enjoyed a productive six-year spell at Southampton, where he was part of the squad that achieved promotion back to the Premier League in 2024.
Before moving to England, Armstrong was an important player for Celtic under Brendan Rodgers and Ronny Deila.
He helped the Hoops win four league titles in a row from 2014 to 2018 and played a big part in winning two trebles in both the 2016–17 and 2017–18 seasons. Celtic supporters appreciated him for his energy and goal threat from midfield, especially in big games like Glasgow Derbies and cup finals.

His strong performances at Celtic earned him regular spots in the Scotland national team. He has played 53 times for his country and took part in both Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, playing a role in midfield at both tournaments.
Given his experience and the level he’s played at, Armstrong is likely to draw interest from clubs who need a reliable and experienced midfielder. Whether he comes back to play in Scotland isn’t clear yet, but his next move will probably depend on where he can get regular football and the right fit as he nears the end of his career.
