Following his playing stint at Celtic, Toure joined Rodgers’ coaching staff, first at Celtic and later at Leicester City, where the Irishman helped guide the Foxes to FA Cup success.
Toure’s growing reputation in the coaching world saw him land the Wigan Athletic managerial job in late 2022. However, a difficult start saw the Ivorian dismissed after just nine games without a win.
Despite the setback, Toure has remained positive, crediting Rodgers and another of his old bosses, Arsene Wenger, for providing him with ongoing support and guidance.
Speaking about their advice, he said [Sky Sports via RecordSport]: “Of course Arsène Wenger, still talking to Mr Wenger. I speak to Brendan Rodgers, of course. They tell me try to keep fit, try to keep your mind busy. Do a lot of gym sport and look after your health first.”
Toure’s comments reflect the respect and strong relationship he maintains with his former bosses. The 42-year-old added: “Then keep applying for jobs. That’s the advice that they give me, looking after yourself, your faith, and keep applying for jobs.”
Rodgers, who returned to Celtic last summer after a stint at Leicester, has long been known for his man-management skills and influence on his players.
His mentorship of Toure has clearly continued beyond their time together at Celtic and Leicester. Toure, who had an impressive playing career with spells at Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool, has been keen to learn from two of the most respected names in football management.
As Toure continues his search for the right managerial opportunity, it’s clear that he is drawing on the wealth of experience and knowledge from his mentors, both of whom have managed at the highest level.
His resilience and commitment to improving himself could eventually see him make a successful return to the dugout.
