Celtic Insert Another Shrewd Sell-On Clause

Gustaf Lagerbielke’s time at Celtic has come to an end, with the Swedish centre-back completing a permanent move to Portuguese side Braga in a deal worth up to £2.7 million.

The 25-year-old joined Celtic from Elfsborg in the summer of 2023 but found first-team opportunities limited under Brendan Rodgers.

Despite arriving with high expectations as a Swedish international, Lagerbielke made just ten appearances for the Hoops in all competitions, scoring once in a Champions League win over Feyenoord.

Celtic have reportedly secured a 10% sell-on clause as part of the deal, ensuring they will benefit from any future transfer profit Braga make on the defender.

Lagerbielke’s move brings a close to a brief and somewhat frustrating spell in Glasgow. He was signed during a defensive injury crisis but never fully settled into Rodgers’ preferred backline.

Braga, who finished fourth in Portugal’s Primeira Liga last season, will offer Lagerbielke a fresh start and the chance to reignite his career in a competitive European league.

The fee represents decent business for Celtic given his limited impact, while the sell-on clause gives the club a stake in his potential development.

With Lagerbielke’s departure, Celtic continue to trim the squad ahead of the new campaign, freeing up space for potential reinforcements as Rodgers looks to shape his squad for both domestic and European competition.
