Former Celtic boss and Liverpool legend John Barnes has had his say on what should happen to bring this league season to a conclusion.
The Englishman believes the league must be allowed to be finished regardless of how long it takes, and even if it means a calendar reshuffle.
Speaking to Sky Sports, they obviously focused on Liverpool but he made the broad assertion this should be carried out in other leagues.
‘You have leagues to be finished and I think leagues have to be finished, not just from Liverpool’s point of view or any other club in any country.
‘It’s obviously bigger than that, you are talking about promotion and relegation all the way down the divisions.
‘So I think if the leagues can even be delayed – you don’t have to rush back to them – maybe you have to write off a season.
‘We don’t know what’s going to happen on April 3 [when the EFL suspension is currently due to end] and maybe they are going to delay it further.
‘Even if we have to start in July or August, what we have to do is finish these games even if it takes up until December, which writes off the [next] season.’
It’s all getting a bit toxic north of the border. Anyone who’s in a bad position wants to see 30 games made null and void in the name of sporting integrity. There are eight games to go in Scotland and if we can get them played in some capacity, it would be Celtic’s choice.
It’s not Celtic’s choice and it will come down to governing bodies making tough decisions.
Ultimately we agree with John but he will not know the gravity of the situation and the severity of the outbreak which could throw any plans to play these games into more chaos.
