Marshall’s heroics in that tie, particularly during the goalless draw at the Nou Camp, where he saved a penalty from Ronaldinho, are remembered as some of the finest moments in Celtic’s European history.
Marshall stepped into the spotlight under dramatic circumstances when he replaced Rab Douglas, who was wrongly sent off during an alledged tunnel altercation at halftime in the first leg against Barcelona. The young keeper’s performance over the two legs, especially at the Nou Camp, was nothing short of miraculous, helping Celtic to a historic 1-0 aggregate victory.
After leaving Celtic in 2007, Marshall enjoyed a lengthy career in England, playing for several clubs. He also had a notable international career with Scotland, capped 47 times and playing a crucial role in securing Scotland’s spot at the delayed Euro 2020 finals by saving a decisive penalty in the qualifiers.
Marshall joined Hibernian from Queens Park Rangers in 2022, where he made 86 appearances and captained the team 39 times.
He also called an end to his international career in the summer of 2022.
Although he is hanging up his gloves, Marshall will remain in football, stepping into a new role as technical performance director at Easter Road, working alongside sporting director Malky Mackay. [Hibernian FC]
This transition marks the end of an illustrious playing career and the beginning of what Marshall hopes will be an equally successful chapter in football management and administration for him.
