Celtic Equal Lisbon Lions’ Legendary Record

Celtic’s dominant performance in the Scottish Cup semi-final against St Johnstone not only secured their place in the final but also saw Callum McGregor reach a personal milestone.

The captain, who opened the scoring in Celtic’s 5-0 win, earned the Man of the Match award for his role in the win. McGregor’s goal was significant for more than one reason—it was the seventh Celtic player to reach double figures for the season, something that hasn’t been done since Jock Stein’s famous 1966/67 team.

As the excitement of the four goals in quick succession at the end of the first half captured much of the attention, McGregor’s achievement may have been momentarily overlooked. However, it’s a remarkable statistic that highlights the depth of the attack that Brendan Rodgers has at his disposal this season.

Alongside McGregor, the likes of Daizen Maeda, Nicolas Kühn, Adam Idah, and others have consistently found the back of the net, ensuring Celtic’s attack is firing on all cylinders as they chase a historic treble.

This achievement is a reminder of how the 1966/67 Celtic team used to score for fun as they dominated in Scotland and across Europe, finishing with their famous European Cup win in Lisbon. Brendan Rodgers’ team now hopes to follow in their footsteps by winning a domestic treble, with Europe the next big target.

It’s worth noting the legendary players of the 1966/67 team: Joe McBride, Bobby Lennox, Stevie Chalmers, Willie Wallace, Bertie Auld, Tommy Gemmell, and Bobby Murdoch all reached double figures for goals that season. Given the current form of players like Daizen Maeda, Callum McGregor, and Greg Taylor, it’s entirely possible that this season could see even more players reach that coveted 10-goal mark.

With the attacking threat in the team and the confidence Rodgers has given them, things are looking good for Celtic again. The final against Aberdeen is another chance to win a domestic treble, but fans will no doubt be excited to see how far this team can go in Europe next season.
