Celtic Duo The Only Positive to Take Home from Almaty – Opinion

On a night where composure was in desperately short supply, two of Celtic’s youngest players at least offered a flicker of promise amid the wreckage.

Dane Murray and Colby Donovan were thrown into the Champions League fire late on in Almaty, and while the bigger names around them faltered, the duo showed the kind of urgency and calmness the rest of the team sorely lacked.

Murray, already in Brendan Rodgers’ thoughts for more game time this season, looked assured at the back and was comfortable on the ball, even as the pressure of the occasion ramped up in extra time. Donovan, still just 18, brought energy and a willingness to take the ball in tight spaces, something that had been missing all night.

Neither were able to change the outcome, but both showed the attitude and personality Celtic fans were crying out for. While others hesitated, the two youngsters played forward, looked composed, and refused to hide.

Given the direction of the tie and the lack of spark from more established names, there’s every reason to believe Murray and Donovan will be seen more regularly this season. Rodgers now needs players he can trust in big moments, and those who can play without fear.
