Celtic Duo Surprising Choices for Bench in Glasgow Derby

Brendan Rodgers has named his starting 11 to face Rangers in the Glasgow Derby this afternoon, with two players surprisingly benched for the game.

James Forrest and Adam Idah both started last weekend’s 3-0 win against St Mirren at the SMISA Stadium, with Forrest providing an assist for Callum McGregor’s opener.

Idah, who rejoined Celtic permanently last month for a reported £8.5 million, is a surprising choice for the bench given his impact against Rangers last season, where he scored two goals in three games, though both were as a substitute.

Nicolas Kuhn has started the season in impressive form, and with Daizen Maeda causing consistent problems for Rangers’ right back James Tavernier in Glasgow Derbies, Rodgers has opted for Kuhn’s current form and Maeda’s work rate.

Kyogo Furuhashi starts up front, and given his history of scoring goals against Rangers at Celtic Park, Rodgers is favouring Kyogo’s proven track record over Idah’s physicality and hold-up play.

The fact that both Forrest and Idah are on the bench today highlights the depth of Celtic’s squad, allowing Rodgers the flexibility to make impactful substitutions throughout the game if needed.

With all of Celtic’s summer signings on the bench today, except for Kasper Schmeichel and Paulo Bernardo who both start, it shows the greater squad depth the Hoops have gained coming out of the transfer window.
