Celtic Defender Seals Loan Move

Celtic defender Ben McPherson will spend the upcoming season at Firhill after agreeing a loan deal with Partick Thistle.

The 21-year-old, a regular for Scotland’s Under-21 side, has been on the fringes of Brendan Rodgers’ first-team squad in recent months.

He played his part in the Hoops’ summer schedule, starting against Portuguese side Estrela Amadora during their warm-weather training camp and getting minutes in the 4-0 win over Newcastle United at Parkhead in the first-ever adidas Trophy clash.

For McPherson, this latest move offers another crack at the Championship after last year’s stint with Queen’s Park. His spell at Lesser Hampden brought 26 competitive outings in the league, Scottish Cup and Challenge Cup, along with an assist. However, his season was cruelly cut short by a damaging ACL injury, forcing him onto the sidelines for much of the campaign.

Now fully fit again, he links up with a Thistle side managed by Mark Wilson, a man who knows Celtic well from his own playing days.

Wilson was quick to welcome his new recruit, telling the Jags’ website: “Ben is going to be an excellent addition to our squad here at Thistle. He fits in perfectly with the ethos we have here because of the energy and effort that he puts into the game, and, having come through at Celtic, he knows how to use the ball too.

“Like Josh Clarke, it’s not his first loan at this level, so he’s got a good idea of what to expect from the Championship, but at the same time he doesn’t think he knows everything and is keen to keep learning and developing.”

McPherson’s time at Firhill should provide regular game time in a competitive setting while allowing Celtic to keep close tabs on his progress.

If he can recapture the form shown before his injury, the youngster could well put himself back into contention for a place in Rodgers’ plans in the seasons ahead.
