Celtic Defender Misses Out For Nation Despite Late Call-Up

Celtic defender Liam Scales was left out of Ireland’s matchday squad as they defeated Azerbaijan 3-0 on the road yesterday.

The 23-year old, left-sided defender was a late call-up to Stephen Kenny’s squad and made the long journey over to Azerbaijan to join up with his Irish teammate.

However, he was left out of the matchday squad entirely as his nation picked up their first win in five games.

He will be hoping to get some minutes when Ireland return to face the next World Cup hosts Qatar on Tuesday at home. Otherwise, it might feel like a bit of a wasted trip for Scales, who instead could have been working on getting up to speed for Ange Postecoglou.

The former Socceroos coach has stated on several occasions that the summer signing isn’t quite there yet to be starting in his side.

With the left-back position still up for grabs – Scales and Ange will hope that opportunity comes in the next few weeks when he returns from international duty.
